Materials

What metals are Morrison Mae pieces made from?
We use solid sterling silver (.925), fine pure silver (.999), 14k and 18k solid gold, 14k gold-filled, solid copper, solid bronze or solid brass. We specify the metals used in each listing description.

Are any of your pieces plated?
No. We believe in using only high quality solid metals in ALL of our work. Not one piece contains any plated metal.

I have metal sensitivities. Is there any nickel in any of your pieces?
No. All Morrison Mae metalwork is 100% nickel-free, including all posts/wires.

But isn’t “gold filled” and “gold plated” the same thing?
No. Gold plating is a micro thin layer applied on the surface of another metal—usually a cheaper one, like nickel. Due to the extreme thinness, this plating will wear off quickly, revealing the nickel below. Gold filled pieces, on the other hand, are created by bonding a thick, solid layer of gold over another metal, such as brass, rhodium, copper or even sterling silver. Unlike plating, Gold filled is required by law to be 1/20th solid gold in the overall weight of a piece. Gold filled jewelry carries a value nearly double that of sterling silver and won’t wear or chip with normal everyday wear. With proper care, your gold filled jewelry can last a lifetime.

Can you use metal from my old pieces and recycle them into new ones?
Yes! in most cases we can take your old pieces and melt them down for use in a new, custom piece. This is a great budget friendly option if you want to incorporate solid gold in your piece for an affordable price—free!

Are your gemstones all natural?
Yes! Every precious and semi-precious gemstone we set is naturally found and mined directly from the earth.

Custom Work

Can you design a one-of-a-kind piece just for me?
Yes! We love making pieces specifically for other people. Send us an e-mail and we’ll set up a FREE consultation to discuss your ideas. Please keep in mind some custom designs will incur an additional design fee of $50 on top of fabrication charges, covering a maximum of two rounds of design time to customize the piece. Additional rounds may incur more fees depending on the changes desired. Custom designs can take 8 to 12 weeks to complete, including design time. Please plan accordingly.

Can I get a custom piece in time for Christmas?
All commission work ceases on September 1 of every year to prep inventory for the holiday rush. This means commissions for Christmas must come to us by July or August. Jobs accepted in September will likely NOT be completed until some time in January or February. Once Customs are closed they will not open up until scheduling allows. We thank you in advance for your understanding.

Can rings be sized up or down to fit me better?
It depends on the ring. Stone pieces cannot be altered because alterations—including ring sizing—can damage the stone or compromise the integrity of the setting. Pieces without stones may be able to be sized up or down depending on the design.

Can your necklaces be made in a longer/shorter length?
In most cases, yes. Please note that because all our connections have been soldered closed for extra security, it means additional work is required to add/subtract chain and, in some cases, may necessitate replacing the entire chain. Therefore, this would be considered a repair and incur an additional repair charge, which start at $20 + any materials needed. Please inquire before ordering if you require a different length. For the budget conscious, we do offer a DIY necklace extender you can add yourself with minimal effort.

A piece I love is sold out. Can you make another one?
While we can never make an exact replica, we have an extensive stone collection and oftentimes we can fabricate a very similar piece. Price may vary based on the final size and stone selection.

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING CUSTOM WORK: If you come to us for custom work, it is understood that you like our style and what we do. So naturally your design will have a similar aesthetic to previous designs. We can certainly bring to life a design of your own, provided it fits within our skillset and design POV. Pictures of things you like/don’t like are great to see but ONLY as inspiration to create our own design. Under no circumstances will we copy the work of another artist, so please do not ask.

Care & Repair

(Additional info regarding care can be found thru the “sizing & care” link at the bottom of the page.

Will my new silver jewelry tarnish?
Yes. So will copper, bronze, brass and even gold. You cannot prevent tarnish, as it happens naturally when certain metals are exposed to oxygen. You can take steps to delay it by keeping your jewelry in jewelry box or plastic bag when not in use. If your piece just needs a quick touch up, we use these special cloths for all our polishing needs.

I got my jewelry wet, will it rust?
No, non-ferrous metals do not rust, but they will tarnish if you don’t dry them with a soft cloth within a reasonable time. We strongly discourage wearing jewelry when you’re showering, sweating or swimming—especially in salt water or chlorine.

My piece has some oxidized (blackened) areas. How do I safely clean it?
Pieces with oxidation can only be cleaned with a special cloth impregnated with polishing compounds. Any other cleaning method will remove the oxidation, altering the appearance of the piece. This will not ruin it but if you accidentally remove oxidation, we can easily re-oxidize a piece for you for a small fee.

Can I clean my pieces in an ultrasonic cleaner?
Pieces that DO NOT have set stones are safe to be placed in the cleaner. However, ANY piece that contains a stone, even a diamond, CANNOT be put in an ultrasonic cleaner, as it may damage the stone irreparably. There are varying opinions about safety of precious gems (particularly diamonds) so as a precaution we tell our customers not to put any stone pieces in an ultrasonic, even diamonds as any inclusions or colorations can make the stone susceptible to shattering by ultrasonic cleaning.

Can I use a liquid cleaner to clean my pieces?
If there are no stones you may be able to safely use liquid cleaners on your piece, but keep in mind these chemicals can be very harsh, and different cleaners will work on different metals. NEVER use liquid cleaners on ANY piece with a stone, even a diamond, as they may remove the finish, alter the color or etch away the surface of stones rendering them dull in appearance.

Help! My piece broke. Can you fix it?
It depends on the damage. While we stand by the quality of our work, jewelry is a very precious and delicate thing, and therefore we cannot guarantee against breakage. Should your piece get damaged, please contact the studio immediately. Each item needs to be assessed individually to assess its repairability. Some repairs will incur a repair charge.

I have a broken piece of jewelry I bought elsewhere, but I love it. Will you fix it?
Sorry, no. We do not repair pieces we did not create. We don’t know how other pieces were made, and there are just too many things that can go wrong during the repair process, potentially causing even more damage.
